Tu vs Vous

When to be formal — and when to relax. Two words for "you".

English has only one word for "you" — French has two. Tu is informal and singular (one friend, one child). Vous is formal or plural (one stranger, one teacher, OR several people). Choosing wrong rarely causes confusion, but it can sound rude or weirdly cold. Each scenario below tells you who is speaking to whom — your job is to pick the form that speaker would use.
