Countries & articles

Each country has a grammatical gender that determines its article — and the right preposition for "to / from". Singapore is the classic exception. This skill covers the three rules and the one rule-breaker.

French country names have a grammatical gender. The article changes (le Japon, la France, les États-Unis), and so does the preposition for going there or coming from. The system: feminine and vowel-starting countries take en (to/in) and de/d' (from); masculine countries take au and du; plurals take aux and des; cities take à and de. Singapore is special — usually treated like a city: à Singapour, de Singapour, no article.
