Pronoun y

How to replace à + place (and dans / sur / chez + place) with the adverbial pronoun y — its position, its use with going verbs, negation, and the idiomatic il y a.

What y replaces: any prepositional phrase of place introduced by à, dans, sur, en, chez + a location: Je vais à Paris → J'y vais; Il est dans le jardin → Il y est. Position: y goes immediately before the conjugated verb (or before the infinitive with modal verbs): J'y vais, Tu vas y aller, Nous y sommes allés. Negation: ne … pas wraps the verb, with y still before it: Je n'y vais pas. Imperative: affirmative → y after verb with hyphen: Vas-y ! Allons-y !; negative → y before verb: N'y va pas !. Note: y replaces places and things preceded by à, but NOT people (à Marie → lui instead).
