The four forms: ce (m. sg. before consonant), cet (m. sg. before vowel or silent h), cette (f. sg.), ces (pl., m. or f.). The ce / cet split: ce restaurant, ce fromage, ce soir — but cet hôtel, cet après-midi, cet homme (vowel/silent-h initial). The t of cet creates a liaison: /sɛ.tɔ.tɛl/. French does not distinguish 'this' from 'that' — both are ce/cet/cette/ces. To add precision, add -ci (here) or -là (there) after the noun: ce gâteau-ci (this cake here) vs ce gâteau-là (that cake there). Time expressions: ce matin (this morning), cet après-midi, ce soir, cette semaine, ce week-end, cette année.
