Three structures for giving advice and making suggestions in French — expressing necessity with il faut + infinitif, ability or permission with tu peux + infinitif, and personal recommendations with tu devrais + infinitif.
il faut + infinitif — impersonal necessity: 'one must / you need to'. Subject is always il; the infinitive follows directly. Negation: il ne faut pas + inf (must not). tu peux + infinitif — ability or permission: 'you can'. Conjugate pouvoir (je peux, tu peux, il peut, nous pouvons, vous pouvez, ils peuvent). tu devrais + infinitif — personal advice: 'you should'. Conditional of devoir — softer than il faut, expresses a recommendation rather than an obligation. Strength scale: tu devrais (soft recommendation) < tu peux (option/permission) < il faut (necessity) < tu dois (strong obligation).
