S'appeler literally means "to call oneself". It's how French speakers say their name: je m'appelle Marie = "I call myself Marie" = "My name is Marie". The verb takes a different form for each subject — and the reflexive pronoun (me, te, se...) also changes. Listen carefully: most singular forms sound identical, but the spelling differs.
