Vouloir & invitations

"To want" — the verb that powers invitations, requests, and intentions. Tu veux venir ? Je veux sortir. Vous voulez un café ? Three different stems and the politeness ladder it sits on.

Three things to internalise. One: vouloir is irregular with three stems: veu- (singular), voul- (nous/vous), veul- (third-plural). The forms: je veux, tu veux, il/elle veut, nous voulons, vous voulez, ils/elles veulent. Two: vouloir takes either a NOUN (je veux un café) or an INFINITIVE (je veux sortir) — never a conjugated verb after it. Three: bare je veux is BLUNT in French — fine for ordering coffee, RUDE for asking favours. The polite forms are je voudrais ("I would like", conditional, taught later) or est-ce que je peux…. For invitations to peers, tu veux…? is friendly and standard.
