Frequency adverbs

Toujours, souvent, parfois, rarement, jamais — how to place them after the conjugated verb, use ne… jamais for 'never', and describe daily and weekly habits accurately.

The five core frequency adverbs (high → low): toujours (always) → souvent (often) → parfois / quelquefois (sometimes) → rarement (rarely) → ne… jamais (never). Position: immediately after the conjugated verb in a simple tense: Je mange souvent de la salade. In compound tenses (passé composé) the adverb goes between the auxiliary and the past participle: J'ai souvent mangé de la salade. Negation — ne… jamais: jamais replaces pas in the negation frame: Je ne mange jamais de viande. Note: jamais alone (without ne) can mean 'ever' in questions or positive sentences: Tu as jamais essayé les escargots ? (Have you ever tried snails? — informal). Additional adverbs: tous les jours (every day), chaque semaine (every week), de temps en temps (from time to time).
